At Affiliated Dentists, we appreciate the many talents and skills of our employees. Recently, our West office on Odana Road has decided to shine a light on one of our hygienist’s talents as an artist and asked him to put up one of his amazing sculptures for all to enjoy.
The Artist
Meet Neil Selzer, a mild mannered, caring dental hygienist at our west office on Odana Road. His passion and enjoyment outside of work and family, can be found in his incredible works of art. His sculptures include materials like wood, metal and rock and are a practice of balance in symmetry and the beauty of natural hues and tones. His sculptures don’t tend to add that “splash” of color to a decor that is so popular, but they do add a sense of harmony and peace.
How It All Started
Nearly 10 years ago, dental hygienist Neil Selzer looked at the empty wall space in the home he shares with his family and decided to do something about it. Being a creative and artistically inspired individual, he found his artistic talents laid in wood, metal and stone sculpture. Neil honed his craft by trying new things, attempting to use materials he was unfamiliar with and began learning what does and does not work. He’s slowly built a side business from taking commissions and selling his pieces. And over time, he has also found the right combination of tools and materials.
Neil’s Art
Neil creates amazing pieces using native hardwoods, steel, copper, brass and stone.
“I’m always looking for unique rocks and stones to incorporate into my pieces.”
Ten years of searching out the right materials and sources, Neil knows where to go when he’s looking for something specific. As an artist, however, he doesn’t disclose such locations, it would ruin the mystery.
The sculptures Neil creates are each one-of-a-kind, but he can make a custom piece to fit a specified style or size. Most of the art he makes is for indoor spaces; however he has been known to make a sculpture for an outdoor space upon request. The time he spends making each piece varies from a few hours to a few days depending on the detail work, the size and the materials used.
Where You Can Find His Art
A couple of Neil’s sculptures can be seen at Affiliated Dentists’ west office. There are a couple pieces inside the office and one large, magnificent structure standing tall and proud outside the office. Other pieces can be found at the Yellow Rose Art Gallery, 122 State St. Madison, WI or by contacting Neil directly at [email protected]. Neil will take your commissions and input, but enjoys having an artistic freedom to create something lovely just for you.
