An Interview With Dr. Porter

Why did you become interested in dentistry?

“I have always been interested in sciences.  My mother was a dental hygienist, so I was exposed to dentistry even as a child.”

Where did you go to dental school?

“I attended Marquette University School of Dentistry.”

How long have you been practicing dentistry?

“Since 2008, so over 5 years.”

What are the best parts about your job?

“The people that I meet on a daily basis.  Forming a relationship with patients is the best part, in my opinion.”

What made you join the Navy?  What are some memorable moments?

“My father was in the Navy.  It is a fantastic opportunity to see and live in different areas of the world.  One time, I was stationed aboard the USS Oak Hill in Virginia Beach, VA as the ship’s dentist.  I received a surface warfare pin by the commanding officer for proficiency in surface warfare concepts and overall knowledge of the ships in the fleet. There are so many memorable moments, such as overseeing safety during hovercraft operations.

What are some pastimes you and your family enjoy?

“Whether it’s summer or winter, we really enjoy being outside.  Below are a few photos.  The first is of me beach combing in front of Bellingham Bay in Washington State.  The second is of my sister, Dr. Laura Peles, and I.  We were hiking along the trails of Mt. Baker, also in Washington State.”

What are some ways you like to stay healthy and active here in Madison?

“I’ve been really busy exploring the many bike paths and bike trails in the city.  We also enjoy spending a night watching the Mallards play.  We are huge sports fans!”
