PEAK OF SUMMER: 5 things you must do before summer is over!

Go out and enjoy all the fun things Madison has to offer before the nice weather runs out. Here are the 5 things you must do before summer is over!

1. Go on a Picnic

It seems a little old-fashioned, but a picnic can be a lot of fun. Put some food in a basket or a cooler, find a grassy spot somewhere, spread a blanket on the ground, and have a meal. Take your friends or your family along and make an experience that you’ll remember. Just be sure to avoid the ant hills!

2. Attend a bonfire

Humans have always bonded with one another around fires. Here’s what you need to join in the tradition: A place in the middle of nowhere to build a fire; wood, kindling, and matches or a lighter; stumps or chairs to sit on; your friends and loved ones. Make it extra special: sing songs while someone plays the guitar; bring graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows for s’mores (don’t forget to gather sticks to roast the marshmallows on!); share your favorite memories from childhood; just sit back and listen to the fire crackle or look up at the stars in the sky.

3. Fly a Kite

Late summer windy days are a perfect opportunity to loft a kite into the sky. Everyone loves watching a kite dance among the clouds and then crash into the ground. Head to the park where power lines are few and won’t interfere. Bring some yard games like croquet, Bocce, or just a frisbee in case the winds die down unexpectedly.

4. Find a Swimming Hole (and JUMP IN)!

Nothing screams summer more than a dip in some cool water on a hot day. Whether it be a morning at a splash pad with the kids, an evening dip in one of Madison’s many public beaches, a game of Marco-Polo in a friend’s backyard, or swimming laps at a community pool, take some time to douse yourself in quintessential summer fun.

5. Bike Hundreds of Miles of Paved Trails

Discover hundreds of miles of paved bike trails across the state. Wisconsin’s “rails-to-trails” program features more than 80 trails waiting to be exploredView Trail Maps
